Travelling from Iran to Oman: flights, ferries, entry rules and tips (November 2026)
Air and sea routes from Iran to Oman, entry rules for Iranians, the best time to go and practical tips for a first trip.
2026-11-08
Oman is Iran's nearest Gulf neighbour, but flight and ferry links have changed many times in recent years. This guide gathers the ways to travel from Iran to Oman, the entry rules and practical tips. It reflects the situation in November 2026; always confirm current schedules with the airline or ferry operator before booking.
Entry rules for Iranians
- 14 days visa-free: passport valid for at least 6 months, confirmed return ticket, hotel booking, travel insurance and sufficient funds. The stay cannot be extended.
- eVisa: for longer stays or several trips, a tourist visa or the one-year multiple-entry visa from the Royal Oman Police portal.
- Cash: carrying OMR 6,000 or more (or the equivalent) must be declared to Oman Customs.
Flights
- Muscat is the main gateway, and the flight from Tehran takes about two hours.
- According to October 2026 reports, SalamAir (Oman's low-cost airline) resumed its Muscat–Tehran service on 18 October with two flights a week.
- The same reports say services by Iranian airlines to Oman remain suspended or restricted for now.
- Routes from Shiraz, Mashhad and southern Iranian cities have operated before; check the airline's official site for each city's current status.
- If there is no direct flight, a one-stop connection through a regional hub is the alternative.
By sea
- The Bandar Abbas–Khasab (Musandam) route has carried passengers for years; Khasab is in northern Oman, separate from the rest of the country, and reaching Muscat from there needs a domestic flight or a road trip through the UAE.
- In 2026 an agreement was announced to launch a Shinas–Bandar Abbas sea line with a passenger lounge; its start date and schedule have not yet been announced.
- Ferry schedules depend on weather and season; confirm with the operator before you travel.
Best time to go
October to April brings mild weather in Muscat, ideal for viewing projects and the beach. Summer is very hot and humid; Salalah is cool and green in the khareef season (roughly July to September).
Practical tips
- Money: the Omani rial is worth about USD 2.6. Iranian bank cards do not work in Oman; plan travel money separately.
- SIM card: tourist SIMs are sold at the airport with your passport.
- Getting around: ride-hailing taxis and car hire are common in Muscat; you can drive for tourism on your home licence for up to three months.
- Dress and etiquette: dress modestly in public, and take extra care at mosques and traditional souqs.
A short trip plan for property buyers
- Day 1: arrive in Muscat, see Al Mouj and the beach
- Day 2: visit two or three projects (for example Muscat Bay, Muscat Hills, Al Yazan in Muttrah)
- Day 3: see neighbourhoods, schools and malls; meet the developer
- Day 4: wrap up, negotiate and, if you decide, reserve
